For One More Day
Author Mitch Albom
Synopsis “If you had the chance, just one chance, to go back and fix what you did wrong in life, would you take it? And if you did, would you be big enough to stand it? Mitch Albom, in this new book, once again demonstrates why he is one of my favourite writers: a fearless explorer of the wishful and magical, he is also a devout believer in the power of love. For One More Day will make you blink back tears of nostalgia. But most of all, it will make you believe in the eternal power of a mother’s love.” ~ James McBride, author of the Color of Water ~

Well, the story’s about a guy who’s like really down and out in his life, in layman’s term - a remorseful loser. He lost his job, gave up his dream as a baseball player and finally, lost his mother. Wallowing himself in the shadows of alcohol and self-pity, he had forgotten how to live life itself. The final straw came upon him when he was finally extricated by his wife and his daughter. So much so that he was not even invited of his daughter’s wedding, but was merely “informed” through 2 wedding photos of his daughter. Despaired, he made the trip back to his hometown, back to his mother’s and committed suicide. Drifting in and out of consciousness, he was back at his mother’s, where she welcomed him ever so warmly and affectionately. Re-living the moments, he tried to recover the lost time while unexpectedly discovering more about his mother’s love, her life, and most of all, HER. Someone whom he had never thought much about before, whom showed him more about life than he ever knew that he had never known. Even after her death.

Really good read!!! The best of Mitch Albom of all I’ve read so far! I thought Memoirs of the Geisha was captivating until I’ve read this one. Reader-friendly, smooth transition of storyline and just when you thought you’ve predicted the ending, an added twist that would leave you marvelling at the author’s fabulous scripting!
There’s a part of the story that actually spelt that when a person pass on, they never really went away. They’ll still respond to the calls of their loved ones in the hearts.
Thanks to Steph and Tiffy for getting me such a wonderful book for Christmas! The best read for 2006!
